REPORT ON CLEANLINESS PROGRAM

Cleanliness is more important when godliness is unlikely. We know a journey of million miles starts with a single step. With this note we the team members of Initiatives of Change realized it to be our responsibility towards the mother earth and took a small initiative by organizing a cleanliness program on 28.07.10 in the premises of Silicon Institute of Technology . It was our first step to make a cleaner India.

Firstly, we had passed this noble message through charts representing cleanliness, humbly appealing for saying no to polythene and requesting for a clean, green and a safe environment. Further we had also placed a few charts that emphasized on demerits of usage of polythene. Furthermore we had also pasted a few messages appealing to save water.
Secondly, it inculcated within us our greatest strength of unity and instilled in us the power of teamwork. We had grouped ourselves into teams and then proceeded to clean the premises. Moreover, many a students joined in this noble deed while we were cleaning the college lawns, classrooms and the hostel premises.

Further, we assembled together in the lawn after completion of the program and vowed to keep the place a better place to live in. The objective of this program was to realize the fact that action speaks louder than words and thus its time for action rather than complaining. Accordingly we planned and successfully executed the cleanliness program with the full-fledged co-operation and support of the team members of Initiatives of Change.

Hold The Door Open(HTDO)

This is the discussion cum sharing initiated by our IofC friend,Arbind Seth in our google groups.............

The world is divided into two types of people. Those who push open a door, walk past and let the door slam behind them. That’s about 99% of the population. And there’s the 1% who open the door and hold it open to allow the next person to walk through. Learn to do that, and you could join the select 1% club too.

Holding the door open is not just an act of chivalry, it’s a mindset. It says you care for other people, that you are not so caught up in your own progress that you have scant regard for other folks. It shows that while you may be in a hurry, you still have time for others. It marks you out as a leader who walks faster, pushes ahead, opens doors – but is then mindful of his team, checking their progress, helping them get past barriers. HTDO doesn’t merely make other people feel good. It makes you feel good too.

The habit of holding the door open translates into a behaviour of helping and caring. On the night before the Math exam, you help a friend who is struggling to pass – rather than focusing on scoring an extra mark yourself. The friend will never forget that. At the buffet table, the HDTO habit makes you pick up a plate and offer it to the lady behind you in the queue. The smile you see on her face is quite priceless. Small gestures all – but they make a huge difference. HDTO marks you out as someone special.

Try it. Become a HTDO person. And get the habit that separates winners from losers.

-Arbind seth

Dear All,

A great learning from the mail...

i realised how sometimes i have been tempted "not to hold the door" for my colleague of mine in my office because he/she has been competing with me. Now i realise, doing so i am becoming the part of the similar feeling what i am carrying for them. Probably i am carrying this attitude since i am exibiting in similar manner. And i believe this has happened unconsciously, when my ego, arrogance have over powered my heart. From now on i will definitely remain conscious of it.

Thanks Pinku for such a wonderful mail. Actually this mail gives me a beautiful sight in its own way to look at my attitude and work on that.

Love & Prayer,
Aswini

Got something to learn from this........
thank you dear........

When I read this mail from Arbind,I have different stream of thoughts and I remembered an incident where I failed to act properly and where I failed to hold the door open and atleast I didnt open it.

Its May,2009 and at that time I was the facing the worst emotional turm-oil of my life.I was travelling from Vijayawada to khammam in an inter-city express and its over-crowded and I was able to get an half-seat.A lady with his child(around10-12 years) came and stand beside me.There were some bandages on his right hand and burning marks on his hand.I dont remember ,how our conversation started. Some of the co-passengers might have started it and I came to know that the boy is suffering from severe form of jaundice and then I asked him to sit in my lap and his body was so hot and I asked her,if she had any reports. She showed me the reports and its severe form of jaundice and I came to know that they consulted the doctor very late and Dr.Bhargav(I heard much about this doctor and people says that he is not a good doctor) treated him for a while and taken Rs.2000 as fee and after a few days, told them to take away the patient as condition is serious and they have taken this child to some 'lay-man' doctor and he burned his hand at 2/3 places and poured some liquid and told them to pour that liquid for a few more days.

Some of my co-passengers shared their views with her that its not good to follow that treatment as that liquid can be something and something but I really dont know about that procedure or line of treatment but as far as my medical knowledge is concerned,I learned that patient should be treated in humane ways with less pain as far as possible. Some compounder ,who is co-passenger in my train started abusing the concerned doctor and I behaved in the way am half-concerned.

Later,I have given her the phone number of a gastroentrologist in Hyderabad and this is the mistake I have done.Sub-consciously I am half-concerned .I should have given my phone number, not of the doctor and I should have taken their contacts. Its that I'm holding the door but not opening it wide.I would have helped them as I stayed at that time for more than a month.I know a physician, who is my uncle who really treats patients with love, care and affection not giving much importance to money and even sometimes he pays their transport charges, other wise,I would have taken him to a homeopathic trust, which cures with out concerning money. But,I have done a mistake giving them some doctor's phone number in Hyderabad half-mindedly.Their economic condition would have never allowed them to travel again to Hyderabad as she was telling that they spent much and borrowed some money for interest for his treatment but all I was thinking at that time is me,my family.

If I would have given some time of me for that child,he would have survived for sure.I dont know what his condition is now but I wish that boy to be playing some where and it really hurts me whenever,I remember this incident. Before a few days,I learned from one of the promising faces of India that India has potential to form a nation health mission with booming pharmaceutical company and at that time also the boys face came before me questioning me for my careless ness.

Opening the door is as important as to hold it and more over we should act at a moment without any delay and if we fail,it may become too late.
Now I hope that child to survive but I cant hold any more.

-Aravind Thumbur

Dear Aravind,

i also join in prayers with you for the health recovery of that child.

Yes friends, each of us might have come across such situations and might get a learning out of that if we re-visit those incidents.

All the best on being a HTDO person.

Love & Prayer,
Aswini

National youth camp Brochure content

Form-A

MRA - Initiatives of Change

Let’s make a difference

‘Let's make a Difference' is an annual youth conference at Asia Plateau, Panchgani. Young people from all walks of life, all across the country are welcome.

A dedicated youth organizing team comes to Asia Plateau year after year to co-ordinate this conference. What brings them time and again to this place is an idea called Initiatives of Change.

Youth today are being pulled in all directions by the media, parents and peers. Which path to take seems to be the question on each young mind? Absence of clear role models and shifting moral values makes this question even more complex.

Initiatives of Change (IofC) believes in honesty, purity, unselfishness and love. At the base of these values is the 'Quiet Time' that focuses on listening to one's own conscience.

Philosophy of IofC challenges a young mind to live by these ethical values. It may sound outdated, yet at the end one feels equipped to live by these values which is the beginning of change.

So, make your date with Initiatives of Change and open those pages of your life which are still unruffled.

Prayas,2010--Expressions

Expressions of Amar Sharma( as on 25 February,2010)
Hello to all, this is Amar from Bhubaneswar wants to share some thing about PRAYAS’10.I always get PRAYAS very much interesting i.e. for me PRAYAS is about fun, masti, friends and a relaxation pill for my life which is full of rush, And “QUITE TIME” as a “MAGICAL HAT”, the more time you put your hand in it the more surprising thing you get. It’s all about your desire to put your hand in it and something good will come out of it. It’s a never ending process. Now after getting this MAGICAL HAT I want to wear it for my life time so that if some problem will be there I will just put my hand in it and I will have a good solution and after that it will be very easy for me to lead my life in a good way. It encourages me to live my life as I want to live it.

Report on Coordinator's workshop-2nd April,2010

On 2nd April,2010, we had organized a coordinator's workshop at silicon campus. About 10 of our friends were present in this workshop. The workshop started at 8:15 AM with the jar experiment. From the experiment we looked deep within by eradicating our outer image and measuring our lives with PHUIL. We compared our lives with the Jar which was looking nice from outside but having the muddy water inside.
We can convert muddy water into clean water by adding pure water to it. Similarly we can be pure by cultivating good qualities within us. Then some of our friends shared how they wore the mask like the jar. And we took resolution to remove the mask that we have wore and we will be transparent from both inside and outside.
After breakfast, we had a discussion on “elements of IofC individual”. Then all observed time of silence, where we wrote what are the Individual actions that we want to take in our life to become different from others. We introspected on the elements that should exist within us / what are the qualities that we want to inculcate in our life.

Few of us shared:
1)I want to develop loving & caring environment within us.
2)I want to develop serving attitude towards others.
3)To support my family emotionally & financially.
4)I want to reduce my jealousness & ego.
5)I want to become like a commando who is active every time.
6)I want to reduce my expenditure.
7)I want to be happy & to keep others happy.
8)I need to develop the understanding attitude.
9)I want to nullify the hatred which I developed for some of my friends.
10)I want to decrease my level of frustration.
11)I want to keep my family bonded.
12)I want to be fluent in English.
13)I want to spend more time with under previliged.
14)I want to become punctual.
15)I want to be self satisfied.
16)I want to adopt 3-D (devotion, determination, dedication) in my life.
17)I want to keep my society pollution free & clean.
As we all feel that relationship is the most important element which is common to all and we want to have good relationship with all hence all of us did our relationship map and we visualized where we have to work. Then we shared our relationship map in pair.
Then we discussed how can we contribute to preserve the nature. We started our discussion with global warming. As now global warming is a major problem for our mother earth & its offspring. So we disscussed what we can do as an individual to escape from this major problem. All of us thought about this for fifteen minutes & then discussed how we can save our mother earth.

We have noted following points to act :
1)Less use of pollutants like petrol. We can use motor bikes only when necessary & more use public transports.
2)If we see anywhere the water tap is left opened, we can close it.
3)We can reduce the use of polyethenes .We can reuse it & more use of paper bags.
4)We should leave the garbage in dustbin.
5)We can save the energy by saving electricity.
6)Servicing our motorbikes in proper time.
7)Finally we should emphasize on reduce, reuse & recycling of non-biodegradable materials.

Then we have a discussion on National Consciousness, the stand of politics in India? What's our future? And how it impacts our lives?
Then at the end we dispersed to Make a Difference with refreshed commitment…

Meeting with Gandhian

Prescript:-
The below report is presented by one of our IofC-Bangalore friend in IofC-Bangalore google pages and we are presenting it here, in order, to make it available to our friends of IofC-Orissa.

On 11 August we the team of IofC-Bangalore visited Fireflies. I reached pretty late, so I missed the introduction part. At the dinner time, our friend Aswini informed the presence of an Old Man, as Gandhian from Wardha. Somehow, as soon I heard those words Wardha, I got up and went to meet him and joined him on table where he was having dinner. I guess that’s when the KT –Knowledge Transfer started. Here our some of the excerpts:

Thakurdas Bang, a Gandhian, had joined Mahatma Gandhi when he was 25 years old. From the time of Quit India movement, assassination of Mahatma, and Jai Prakash Narayan Movement against the emergency has been some of his milestones in path of practising Gandhian way of life. Both sons of Thakurdas, Abhay Bang and Ashok Bang run NGOs in Wardha and have received International acclaim.

Bhagat Singh-

Gandhi personally wrote 4 letters to Lord Irwin seeking release of Bhagat Singh, one of the letters replied by Irwin was addressed to Gandhi as “Dear Barrister Mohandas”, in which he reiterated that Bhagat Singh has expressed in court that he was no regretting for his act of violence, which on based of moral code can be forgiven but not on Legal code. To which Gandhi discussed on impacts of sentence on future generation. All three; Gandhi, Bhagat singh and Irwin, were right on their sides.

Jawarhalal Nehru chosen as PM-

It was not that Gandhi had handpicked Nehru as PM, it was more that he was the undisputed popular Leader amongst the masses and youth specially, as well was a face of India to outer world to whom India was much unknown. For successful democracy most popular leader is to be chosen.

Partition-

Gandhi always stood with will that partition of India can happen only over his dead body. He explained that he would practise Satyagraha and fasting until death. In Congress Party Meeting, Gandhi was invited along with all senior leaders of Congress to discuss proposed partition of India. Nehru and Sardar Patel presented before them that they have given their word as consent towards Partition of India. To which Gandhi in shock asked them, as to why he wasn’t informed before this. Nehru mentioned that Gandhi was in Calcutta, and it was not possible to contact him. To which Gandhi in disturbed manner asked that in 1947, how was he not able to contact him, he could have used a messenger or anything of such crucial nature to be discussed. To which he was replied that it was assumed that Gandhi’ stand would anyways be against the Partition of India. To which Gandhi, thought in silence and said that “Mein Kuch tho rasta nikalunga” (I will find some way out). He gazed into the eyes of Nehru and in few seconds Nehru head was down in shame, and same was done to Sardar Patel and other members. In the Congress Working Committee Meeting when Gandhi asked who would join him against the Partition only 1 member supported him, that was Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan. All other seniors including Nehru and Patel were in favour of the partition. Jai Prakash Narayan along with many abstained from taking any sides. This entire details of this meeting was narrated by JP Narayan to Thakurdas.

Reservation-

There has been a lot of atrocities against communities based on caste and tribes. Reservation was required post Independence, but its benefits have not yet been materialised. If reservation has to be there it must have time limits of next 5 to 10 years.

How did Youth buy the idea of non-violence versus violence? Was it just the charisma of Gandhi?

Non violence has been a concept far before Gandhi came. Yes, Gandhi did have charisma, but it was not accepted just because of that. Because, many decades later, JP Narayan started a similar movement across the nation when millions of Indians protested in peaceful manner against the imposition of Emergency. Weapons were banned by the British to be available among the masses. Since it was difficult to procure arms, Non Violence as a concept to many seemed difficult but a way of achieving freedom. Non Violence shows not cowardice but courage.

Failure of Gandhism as mass movement Post Assassination-was it a failure of Institution building?
Who is follower of Gandhi, his sons, me, you, followers? What is Gandhi, if I drink Pepsi can I be a follower of Gandhi.

Doesn’t anti-Globalisation conflict with concept of Vasudev Kutumbak-
Do we need products from distant places? Should we consume products of what is available near us? Where I as a consumer can go and see the quality of production, how he does it. Why do we buy goods from far? Just to reduce costs isn’t, because scales of production are cheaper in far distant lands. The concept of Swadeshi, and how it relates to the self sustaining economies. Why buy from distant place where there is control by consumer, where he is not witness to the production or creation of a product.

Godse-
There were 7 attempts to kill Gandhi, Godse was arrested at Wardha before, and on Gandhi’s consent he was pardoned. Thakurdas was in Wardha Ashram when this event happened. Infact the Home Ministry was informed by senior person from ICS, that a possible assassination bid was being attempted and planned by some senior people in Hindu Maha Sabha.

Farmer suicides-
Thakurdas asked us, why did Farmer Suicides increase Post Independence? To which some said that it, in those there might information deprivation, now we have access to rural parts of India. To which he talked of modern methods of cultivation which are actually degrading soil and environment, drinking water, long run losses. He reiterated that Farmers are losing methods of organic farming, towards short term benefits of in-organic farming.

Direct Retail Sourcing from Farmers-
Thakurdas mentioned that the entire ecosystem will be abused further. They will be dictated which crops to grow, and with large scale, organizational farming, many will become unemployed. Even the middle layer of present abusers will be unemployed. To which the Youth asked as the middle layer is much worse than direct retail sourcing. To which Thakurdas replied that, today we are less sensitive to fellow humans. We don’t have feelings and compassion for other humans. If these middlemen have compassion they wouldn’t have abused the farmers.

Bitasta Das, one of the young visitors said- “It was a rare occasion for me to meet a person of this stature like Sri Thakurdas Bang. After talking to him one could indeed sense the power of simplicity. I managed to catch him for a while to talk about my interest area- the North East India. On being asked about the integration of the North Eastern states during the freedom struggle, he was of the opinion that the leaders from Assam were ardent Gandhian. In fact the first CM of independent Assam Sri Gopinath Bordoloi had very close contact with Gandhiji. The new blood of Assam showed some spark to topple the negligence from the centre but they eventually got corrupted and things are back to square one. He reaffirmed that Jay Prakash Narayan was a popular and a very influential person in the North Eastern states. The unification of these states with mainland India has been mostly due to his efforts.”

It was memorable day for all us, so much of high energy discussions. Thakurdas offered meeting us at 6.30 am, he was infact ready to meet us at 4 am, but since many of the youngsters were burnt out, we met 6.30 am, he was present at the meeting place well before that, just like Gandhian should be.

The questions he asked us, made me introspect how I have been using my youth. When I discussed with him some of my inhibitions, his personal advice and guidance was really thought provoking, and made me feel grateful toward destiny for creating an opportunity to meet so much time with him.

A Gandhian, whom I shall always hold close to my memories.

Jai Hind.

Our friends at silicon organized a Coordinators' workshop today(2 April,2010) at Silicon campus and the report will be prepared and published soon.

LMAD-March,2010 report

An Initiatives of Change workshop “Let's Make A Difference” was held in the premises of Silicon institute of technology from 06 Mar to 07 Mar, 2010 to spread ‘the idea’ Initiatives of change (IofC) to youngsters, especially silconites and a few others from various colleges of Bhubaneswar. Around 36 participants came together in this workshop to experience change and become change agents.

The workshop started at 6:00 PM with facilitators welcoming the participants with an MRA song (Dekho Dekho...) and later we interacted with participants through a few questions like, what brings you again in this workshop? What are your expectations from this workshop? Later "My journey with IofC" was shared by Amar and then we moved on to ice-breaking events. Anil facilitated us to shout Eha.., then transforming us into Rabbit, elephant, etc., and finally showing us the power of our own concentration through Matchstick game.

In between, we danced to the tunes of elated happiness through 'Arey chi cha'. The day ended with a family meet, agenda being the discussion over questions like since the last one-year, what is the memorable incident in your life? Are you satisfied with your life-if yes, why? If no, why? What do you want to become in life? Whatever you are doing now, is it leading you towards your dreams? Is there anything, which is disturbing you?

The next day started at 7:00 AM with prayer and an exercise session facilitated by Abhishek. Later, we were introduced to the concept of "Quiet time - An experiment of listening to inner voice." Every one experienced the quiet time for half-an-hour and shared their experiences, thoughts and ideas. We concluded the 'Quiet time' session with a small meditative exercise and every one enjoyed their closeness with the person, whom they love and a few shared their experience.

After breakfast, "Let's make a difference" session started with banana skit which cogently helped us to discern our own presence in day-to-day problems and how we blame others for the problems we created ourselves. The skit was followed by a thought provoking song “Kaun Hai Zimmedar…”. By that, we realized, the way we are becoming the part of problems in some way or the other and a question arouse- How can we Make A Difference?

Then, we discussed about the characteristics of a successful individual and we grouped the characteristics into four broad values- Purity, Honesty, Unselfishness and Love (PHUL). Later we met in small groups to prepare charts on how do we relate ourselves with these values and how we interrelate each value with other three values. The charts were presented and a person from each small group shared her/his experience with the values. Some of our friends shared the difficulty to withstand PHUL in day-to-day life but concluded that the inner serenity lies in following these values. After all, "How can we make a better society and ideal nation with imperfect people?" and we resolute to "Be the change we want to see in the world"

After lunch, we had "Sabasan" for an hour with light instrumental being played and later everyone was reactivated with “Tom and Jerry" clapping effectual. “Family session" started with the discussion over importance of relationships. All of us drew our relationship maps, which showed the emblazoned 'ME' surrounded by parents, family and other relations. We compared our life with a garden where green leaves and flowers resemble pleasant relationships and dry leaves resemble interrupted or broken relationships. A few of our friends shared their relationship map describing their relations and the way they tried to repair their interrupted relations. Realising our unpleasant relations, we took a resolution to repair them by taking the initiative from our side. We came to know that after all, "Joyousness is NOT Because of, BUT In spite of".

After a short break, we experienced the "Time of silence" with Tibetan incarnations providing us inner serenity. Later we watched the video, “A transformation experience" which depicted the experience of Frank Buchmann and a few other IofC friends. We learned about the power of redemption and came to know that, the way of goodness is the only way to peace and harmony and changing ourselves is the easiest and most important thing in this world.
Later, we presented the video of IofC-Orissa depicting various activities being held by IofC-Orissa team. Another video "Chicken ala carte" was presented which exposed us to the facts of hunger in this world, then floor was offered to every one for open forum discussion on IofC and details about it. Then we proceeded to call it an end for the workshop but the beginning of a new hope and many differences.

We have taken a group photograph and dispersed to make a difference and with this new friends, who were welcomed to the family made us happier and motivated us to move in the path of spiritual regeneration of our nation.

Parichay - Our Identity

In the “Orissa I Care” open forum discussion during Prayas’ 05, we had an initiative thought of in concern with, promoting handicrafts and handlooms of Orissa. After the conference, some of us got together to discussing and building on the thought. We also went ahead meeting and interacting people at a handicraft center in Bhubaneswar “Ekaamra Haat” where they sale goods.

We heard their concern, that these goods are not getting recognized and promoted at various forums. They are loosing their identity slowly. We also heard the concern to reduce the role of middleman in some parts of handicraft industry such as handloom and appliqué works.

We had couple of brainstorming meetings discussing from where and how to start. We decided to make a trip to Pipili and named the initiative as “Parichay – Our Identity”. We thought to actualize our discussion on the eve of new year and hence on 1st Jan 2006 a crew of 11 members left Bhubaneswar to Pipili, the center of all kinds of appliqué work in the entire state. We carried our video camera and few other still cameras to document the experience.

We had prior contacts of some craftsmen from previous interactions at Bhubaneswar who are related with this industry for pretty long time. We interacted with those people who guided us through the shops and to other craftsmen who are actually in the heart of developing the things. Some of them expressed;

- “No doubt, these days the market for such products has got good acceptance but what we earn from these business is not enough to make it as our full time profession”.

- “We are engaged in appliqué works but we won’t wish to see our off-springs also doing the same job of a craftsman”.

- “We are financially challenged but if the government supports us then things will change completely. For example, we are making lampshades whose market price is between Rs. 100 to Rs. 150 depending on the model and the quality of raw material used, but what we are paid? Not even one quarter of the price...”

We collected data, shot videos as well as took still photos in order to make a documentary on the entire concern.

We were satisfied to an extent after getting in touch with the people & getting a chance to listen them and their concerns. We had never got a chance earlier to see the work and listen their experience so closely. After packing up with the interaction we went to Chandrabhaga and spent some time with ourselves.

After 5 months when some of our friends participated in the National IofC youth conference, they showcased the appliqué work products at our national center at Panchgani, Pune. The products were well appreciated and all the materials were sold out hand to hand by the participants who came to participate in the conference from various regions of India.

Akshar Jyoti

A Sparkle of Knowledge

While roaming around in the scarlet evenings, some of our team members based at Silicon often came across a bunch of children with muddy feet, innocent eyes and faces laden with cement dust. The sight would sometimes stop them in their tracks and they would ponder, could we do something for these kids, who belong to a nearby slum area. These children used to play in unhygienic conditions. Their parents being out to work since early morning, they were left out to look after themselves. Excepting one or two of them, none of the rest went to any school.

After thinking for a while, our team members and the Executive Director of SIT, Mr. Nitai Gaur Dhall, together came out with this idea of spending our evenings with these kids, teaching them the basics and playing with them.

The dawn of August 15th 2004, heralded a new promise and brought about a sense of newfound freedom in the form of ‘Akshar Jyoti’ – the light of knowledge. Some students of SIT also volunteered to carry on this work along with our team members. We have been allotted a classroom in our college for this activity. With the support of Mr. Dhall, we collected and distributed clothes, bags, slates and books among the children.

Initially it took a lot of cajoling and chocolates to make these children aged between 3-11 years, come daily. Gradually they began to enjoy their playtime that preceded or followed the study hour. They basically learn counting, alphabets and small sums.

Then came the question of hygiene. We personally interacted with each of their parents. Gradually they understood the importance of hygiene and started practicing it. We arranged for medical checkup of all those kids and distributed medicines to the needy. The main concern for us is that these parents are unaware and illiterate. So we are continuing in our effort to educate these elder people also and we hope to succeed soon.

“The greater use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it”

Akshar Jyoti continues to be an integral part of our lives. It gives us immense pleasure to spend some quality time with the underprivileged children of the workers employed at the construction site of Silicon. The foundations of love, trust, and friendship that were laid between us on the 15th Aug' 04 have strengthened further over time. Being inspired, some other students of Silicon also joined us in our pursuit of bringing the light of education in their lives.

But even though the children learnt their alphabets perfectly, they still came in dirty clothes and chose to walk barefoot despite having slippers. We realized that if they had to be nurtured and their personalities refined, some values had to be inculcated in them. The importance of education, cleanliness, hygiene and nutrition had to be instilled in their lives.

It is said that:

if u teach a man, u teach an individual,

and if u teach a woman, u teach a whole family.

With that in mind, we set about getting the parents of these children involved in the process too. Sadly, out of around 60 people, only a few turned up. Nevertheless, it was an interactive experience. Though some of the parents had had primary education, they surprisingly did not believe that their children’s future lay in education.

These meetings, however, were not continued for long as the workers had to attend to their household chores in the evening. Our dream is still a long way from being realized. In the meantime, we continue teaching the children, playing with them and helping them grow. Being a part of their lives has been a humbling experience. It has taught us o value things we often take for granted in our lives.

As time passes, some workers migrate to different locations, taking their children long in search of new jobs, new lives. Will this life be better than what they already have? Maybe, it will, if we realize that it is our responsibility towards humanity to make small changes in this world. No matter where we are, we can light up the lives of these unfortunate people, just by spending few hours with them. That way we can pay some of it back to our nation or, pay it forward perhaps?

Evolution of IofC in Orissa

A new concept for the people of Orissa, though not a new one for the world, Moral Re Armament (presently known as Initiatives of Change), is making an attempt to reach out to each and every individual of this state. Due to several constraints like geographical, financial and mainly due to lack of awareness, it becomes difficult for the people residing here to participate in the conferences organized at Asia Plateau in Panchgani (Maharashtra).

In May 1997, Rajiv Goenka, a youth from Orissa, first attended the Initiatives of Change (IofC) - National Youth Conference, held at Asia Plateau. He was eventually inspired to proliferate its ideas and messages to the youth in various regions in India, with the motto that “If the youth are not able to reach Asia Plateau, then IofC should be brought to them”. Since it’s easier and better to begin change at home, it triggered off the idea of organizing the first regional Youth Conference in Orissa. Due to his sincere effort he could gather 5 more youth and they attended the National Youth Conference in Jun 2003. On their way back to Orissa, this group was highly motivated and discussed in details, on how to go about organizing the 1st Youth Conference in Orissa.

After coming back, Harsh W. Mishra, who was part of the above youth group, took active role in the evolution of this dream. Thus, with meticulous planning and efforts of Rajiv and Harsh, the first Regional ‘Initiatives of Change’ Youth Conference was organized in lush premises of Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, in Dec 2003.

The overwhelming success of the first Youth Conference instilled enough confidence in us to build a youth team with volunteers from all over Orissa as well as outside Orissa – a youth team comprising youngsters who feel earnestly to dedicate themselves to the cause of development of Orissa.

The three D’s – Dedication, Determination & Devotion – laid the foundation stone of the IofC-Orissa team. As a result of will power, the Three D’s and a desire to make a difference, months of planning and hard work generated a self-belief in us to continue with these ideas. Not to forget the Initiatives of Change (IofC) - Youth Team of Asia Plateau, the Directors, faculties and staff of Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar helped us remarkably as they guided us on the path of success.

All this and more gave us the zeal to come to a unanimous decision of not only taking up the initiative to organize such youth conferences annually, but also to devote out time to visit some villages of Orissa, to teach and spend time with small children from near-by slums, taking some steps in promoting Handicraft industry of Orissa, conducting small workshops for school and college students, doing out-reach programs through Seminars and lecture series at various institutes etc...

Over the last Seven years, IofC-Orissa group has had a phenomenal growth, and every year an endeavor has been made to reach far and wide and to influence as many as possible, with the principles of Initiatives of Change (IofC).

And the journey continues…
